Because the sound of the streets is too often like an episode of 'The Bill' - hard hitting and 'real', certainly but without any of the stupidity, joy and occasional moments of beauty that you'll find in here. Original Pirate Material seems to be remarkably solid. And given the fact that it does, eventually, manage to overcome the horrific-sounding concept of British hip-hop, it seems pretty reasonable to give it a recommendation. Bloody good show, I say.... więcej »

This is the type of album whose influence could be felt in the coming years; after all, it's pretty inspiring to see an unknown Brummie lad come from out of nowhere and establish himself both as a hip-hop auteur and a fine street poet, and you can expect many kids to create their own DIY music project as a result. Ultimately, this is the sound of a guy stepping into adulthood with his eyes alternately wide, rolled, bloodshot, and staring at his shoes. On Original Pirate Material, Skinner combines the boy-next-door DIY of U.S. garage rock with the sound of U.K. garage and displays an alchemic ability to turn the humdrum of everyday life into a record that is at times empowering, hilarious, melancholy, awkward, and charming.
